Since 1991, I have traveled more than 3500 miles by foot and by canoe documenting the Appalachian Trail and Appalachian rivers originating along the famous footpath. My travels include an end-to-end hike of the 2,160-mile-long Appalachian Trail, a 540-mile, 100-day canoe journey on the Chattahoochee and Apalachicola Rivers in Georgia and Florida, and a 160-mile, 26-day canoe journey on the Etowah River in Georgia.

I am the co-author of River Song—A Journey Down the Chattahoochee and Apalachicola Rivers (University of Alabama Press, 2000) which tells the story of my and my former wife’s canoe journey down those rivers and features nearly 200 images of the rivers and the people along them. I am also co-author of Wildflowers of the Appalachian Trail (Menasha Ridge Press 1999) a guide to common wildflowers along the Appalachian Trail The book, which features more than 100 of my wildflower images and  won a 1999 National Outdoor Book Award for Art & Design.

My third book, Wildflowers of the Smoky Mountains and Blue Ridge, was released in Spring 2005.

Additionally, my work has been published in numerous national and regional magazines including, National Wildlife, Backpacker, Blue Ridge Country, Atlanta, Georgia Journal, Southern Living, Outdoor Traveler and Blue Ridge Outdoors. Book credits include Appalachian Trail Thru-Hiker's Companion, Waterfalls of the Blue Ridge, Trails Across America, Riverkeeper’s Guide to the Chattahoochee, Trailside’s Guide to Advanced Backpacking, Trailside's Guide to Hiking and Backpacking and Step by Step Along the Appalachian Trail.

At competitive art shows, my images have been recognized with numerous awards and are collected throughout the country.

Today, in addition to my photographic work, I am active in work to protect and preserve the water resources of the southeast, serving as executive director and riverkeeper at the Coosa River Basin Initiative, a non-profit environmental organization based in Rome, Georgia.

I am a former newspaper photographer and writer and a graduate of Rome’s Berry College. I currently reside in a 110-year-old home in Rome’s historic district with my daughter and three cats.
